Cities of Art
Rome
“Roma caput mundi”: the intrinsic greatness of the capital of an empire that was considered to be the whole world is covered in these three words. History pervades the city. The ancient glory is still present in the remains of a theatre and the porticoed capital that seems carelessly situated on the wayside. The magnificence of the Colosseum leaves those who find themselves in front of it breathless. Walking around Rome means to rebound through the centuries where history has been accomplished. Not even the most distracted onlooker could ignore this much homage to archaeology, art and culture. Divided by the River Tiber, Roma has that romantic charm that explodes with the light and shade of the sunset, enveloping the walkways along the River Tiber between its bridges and paved streets.
Italian music and film are rich in praise of the Eternal City. From Federico Fellini to Alberto Sordi, as well as a countless number of producers, actors, directors, songwriters and show-business celebrities. Among the thousands of beautiful features in Rome, there is St. Peter’s Square with the Basilica that is embraced by the Bernini colonnade and surmounted by the large dome; as well Piazza Navona and the Trevi Fountain, the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel cannot be missed.
Milan
For lovers of a dynamic city life with all its features, Milan is the capital of Italian fashion. It is embellished with attractive shopping streets and characterised by a vibrant nightlife.
Looking beyond its frenetic and metropolitan appearance, Milan is also a city of great beauty, art, architecture and cultural aspects that have no equal: from the Cathedral to the Sforzesco Castle, from the Navigli Canals through the city centre streets, from Brera with its famous Art Gallery to the prima donnas at the Scala Opera House.
As soon as one leaves the city, the wine and gastronomy and the pastoral glimpses open the window onto a still respected and conservative lifestyle that is in rhythm with peasant traditions.
Venice
The uniqueness of Venice lies in the extraordinary beauty of its monuments, art treasures and history, but, above all, with the city being reflected in the water of its canals and its alleyways with churches and buildings scattered on an archipelago of islands in the lagoon.
Venice lives immersed in an enchanting and fairytale atmosphere where the images of houses and churches parade along the Grand Canal. The charm of precious architecture and the mosaics of St. Mark’s and the stupendous buildings such as the Doge’s Palace, the Ca’ d’Oro and the Ca’ Pesaro are resplendent together with the Rialto Bridge and the Bridge of Sighs.
Florence
Florence is a city with an exceptional legacy of art, which pays splendid testimony to its secular and vibrant civilisation, the cradle of the Renaissance and the Italian language. Its monuments depict the stages of the artistic Florentine civilisation: the Baptistery with its mosaics, the Cathedral with its sculptures, the Medieval churches with their frescoes, the buildings belonging to the State and those privately owned (Palazzo Vecchio, Pitti Palace, Palazzo Medici-Riccardi, Palazzo Davanzati), the monasteries and cloisters, and the convents and supping rooms. The civilisation of the Etruscans is richly documented in the Archaeological Museum, while the most illustrious works of art are gathered together in the city’s numerous museums, such as the Uffizi: the world’s most popular art gallery.
Naples
The capital of high spirits and hospitality, Naples can recount much about Italian history. The majesty of Vesuvius, observing and protecting Naples from on high, creates an certain atmosphere that recalls memories of ancient legends, where the sea and land merge to give birth to an unforgettable setting.
There are countless artistic treasures to visit along the small streets and romantic alleyways in the historic centre, which has been declared as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are also palaces, churches, catacombs and underground pathways. The areas of Medieval and Renaissance power are gathered around the Castel dell’Ovo and the Royal Palace.
