Legal Requirements

The marriage of two people only receives legal acknowledgement in Italy with a civil marriage. It is obviously possible to celebrate with a religious or symbolic ceremony, but for the marriage to also have le-gal validity, it is necessary to have a civil ceremony either before or after the ceremony of your choice. In Italy, the only religious authority that can officiate a religious wedding that is also legally recog-nised as civil marriage is the Catholic Church.

With regard to the bureaucratic requirements that are necessary for your wedding, it is important to know that:

- they follow different procedures for civil or religious documentation;
- they can vary according to your country of origin and to the municipality where the cere-mony is taking place.

As a maximum indication, the following are generally required for a civil wedding in Italy:
- A Nulla Osta (document required for non-Italian nationals to marry in Italy) from the country of origin issued by your Consulate in Italy;
- Request for the wedding to be performed in Italy;
- Marriage banns;
- Birth certificates printed in both languages;
- Two witnesses;
- Valid identification documents (for the Bride&Groom and witnesses);
- Interpreter;
- Other documentation that changes according to the circumstances.
